Dynamics CRM 2011 Rollup 12 (Polaris) No Sub-Grid Limit!

Paul Nieuwelaar, 23 January 2013

In previous versions of Dynamics CRM 2011, there was a limit for how many sub-grids would load on a single form by default. This limit was 4, meaning the 5th sub-grid, and any subsequent sub-grids on your form would not be loaded automatically. Users would have to click the ‘load records’ link before they could see the records in these grids.

With Rollup 12 and Polaris, we can now add as many sub-grids to our form as we like. All sub-grids will now be loaded automatically, without having to worry about limiting the total number of sub-grids on the form to 4, or loading the additional sub-grids using JavaScript.

Out of interest, I thought I would see if the limit was in fact removed, or if it had just been replaced with a larger number (like 10 for example). To test this limit I added 40+ sub-grids to a form, and then loaded the form to see if all of them would load by default. You will be pleased to know that all 41 of my sub-grids loaded successfully (all be it after about 15 seconds).

The key thing to remember is that the more sub-grids you add, the longer it will take for the form to load. However in some cases we just need to add more sub-grids (maybe not as many as 40), so at least now we can get away with adding more without having to use JavaScript to load them all.
